Park City Ice Arena officials plan to shut down the rink for approximately three weeks in May and June to reapply the painted markings used in sports like hockey and curling.
Jon Pistey, the arena’s operations manager, says there have been problems with the blue paint used in the markings migrating to the surface of the ice. He says an additive used in the ice-making process meant to reduce energy costs might have had an adverse effect on the blue paint.
The blue paint is used to mark places on the hockey field of play and curling targets. It is also used in the Park City and Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District logos on the ice.
The workers in May and June intend to remove the ice surface and then paint the markings onto the floor itself as well as a painting the floor white. The arena has been painting the markings onto the ice instead of the floor, according to a report submitted to Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council.
Pistey says the arena is scheduled to close for the work on May 22 and tentatively slated to reopen June 14.
