The Summit County Council on Wednesday approved a set of grants to help fund new parks, bleachers and an extensive remodel of the Racquet Club in Park City.

Recreation grants from the Summit County Recreation, Arts and Parks Tax, are divvied out proportionally based on the populations of western and eastern Summit County. There was $480,000 available in 2010.

The RAP Tax is a one-tenth of 1 percent sales-tax initiative meant to help fund art, cultural and recreation programs in Summit County.

“A lot of that money actually comes from people who come and visit and buy things in the county,” said Tim Douglas, chairman of the RAP Tax Recreation Advisory Committee. “So it’s a pretty good tax.”

About 45 percent of the funding is earmarked for publicly owned recreation facilities like the Park City Racquet Club, Basin Recreation Fieldhouse and Oakley Recreation Complex. In 2010, the panel that recommends to the Summit County Council which facilities should receive funding had 10 grant requests. Some money was allocated for each application.

“The property has to be owned by a governmental agency,” Douglas said.

More money from RAP Tax was allocated this year for facilities on the East Side of Summit County than has been granted to Kamas and Coalville in the past.

“This is actually going to be fairly well received because in the past there has been concern that the East Side has not received funding,” Douglas said. “I’m really happy that we were able to fund so many of the projects.”

The North Summit area this year received nearly 24 percent of the funding. About 19 percent of the money was granted for facilities in South Summit.

The grants approved by the County Council include:

$43,940 for a pocket park in Coalville

$45,000 for software and a study for the North Summit Recreation District

$25,000 for park improvements in Henefer

$90,000 for park improvements in Peoa

$49,060 for a playground for the Park City School District

$37,000 for bleachers for the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District

$25,000 for a pavilion for Basin Recreation

$15,000 for Basin Recreation to build a bicycle pump park at Trailside Park

$50,000 for Basin Recreation to build a skate park at Trailside Park

$100,000 for the remodeling of the Park City Racquet Club
