One of the longest standing summer traditions on the East Side of Summit County could receive a makeover.

With this year’s festivities about to get started, County Courthouse officials say they are embarking on a discussion about finding a new location in the Coalville area for hosting the Summit County Fair in the future.

“I’m not sure where it will go,” Summit County Manager Bob Jasper said.

The fair has outgrown its current site in Coalville, Jasper said.

“I think our fairgrounds site is too small, too cramped and too fenced in by other uses,” he recently told the Summit County Council.

County officials are looking for property to relocate the Summit County Fair. A task force is scheduled to begin a discussion at the County Courthouse Thursday at 8 a.m. The task force includes government officials and representatives from the North Summit School District and North Summit Special Recreation District.

Jasper said he is hesitant to invest money in the current fairgrounds in Coalville. He said he wants to look at other possible locations in the North Summit area.

Coalville Mayor Duane Schmidt is also a member of the task force scheduled to meet on Thursday.

“The fair needs to stay in Coalville,” Schmidt said in a telephone interview. “We are the county seat, and one thing after another has been pulled away from the county seat.”

Summit County has not invested in the fairgrounds over the years, Schmidt said.

“I don’t know that there has been any real sizable investment in the fairgrounds in a long time,” he said.

The property sits vacant for most of the year, he added.

“You definitely want a facility like that to be multi-faceted so it gets used on a regular basis, not just a piece of property that is used one week a year for the Summit County fair,” Schmidt said.

Coalville resident Karen Brostrom said she hopes the county fair does not leave the North Summit area.

“As a Coalville resident, it would give us one less thing to draw people to town,” Brostrom said.

The 2010 Summit County Fair is scheduled in Coalville from Aug. 7 through Aug. 14.
