The military may be close to embarking on a major commercial development project near Silver Creek and members of the state Military Installation Development Authority are scheduled to hold a meeting this month to discuss the proposal with the public.
MIDA is a state agency charged with helping to facilitate the development of military lands in Utah. The meeting is scheduled Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Sheldon Richins Building at Kimball Junction. All residents interested in learning more about the military’s plans for building a hotel and shopping center in the Park City area are encouraged to attend.
The military has discussed developing a hotel in the Park City area for several years. The resort would provide room discounts to servicemen and women.
With the hotel slated to be built near the Jordanelle Reservoir in Wasatch County, the latest plan also involves taking tax revenue from a new commercial center near Silver Creek to help offset the costs of subsidizing room rates for the armed forces.
The commercial center could be built on property near The Home Depot, owned jointly by Park City and Summit County. But military officials have not provided much information about the project to the public.
“I really want MIDA to come up and tell our constituents what they’re doing, why they’re doing it and listen to our constituents,” said Claudia McMullin, chairwoman of the Summit County Council. “It’s about explaining the project and getting public input about the project. Let’s listen to what people say and get the best project we can.”
County officials have no authority to stop the commercial project from being built, she explained.
“I want [MIDA] to explain to our constituents who they are, why they have the power and what their intent is,” McMullin said. “We, the county, don’t have anything to say about it.”
