The sledding hasn’t exactly been tough for them so far, but the Park City High School girls’ tennis team knows there is something formidable waiting for them on the horizon.
A week after blowing away region foe Carbon, the Miners continued on its extraordinary streak against Wasatch, defeating the Wasps with a final varsity score of 5-0 in Heber on Tuesday. But those scores may be misleading.
“I don’t want to get overly confident,” head coach Lori McMahon said. “We’ve had some easier matches early on, but they’re going to get tougher as we go on.”
In winning their second-consecutive, the Miners’ core singles players continued their impressive streak as the likes of Stormy Dvorak, Solveig Karlsen and Alex Oriente all swept their Wasatch counterparts, 6-0, 6-0.
While McMahon is happy her team is playing well right now, she knows that things could get rough very soon. The Miners face the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle next Wednesday in Draper, then head to the St. George Invitational Thursday to take on southern 3A teams that are able to play tennis year round.
“It’ll be tough,” McMahon said. “But we have three really strong singles players that are doing well.”
McMahon added that her doubles teams also have played well, but sees room for improvement. She said it’s just a matter of time before her pairs begin to really click on the court.
“We’re working on doubles movement, trying to keep them close and keep them energized,” McMahon said. “Doubles is a work in progress.”
The No. 1 doubles pair of Ashton Strauss and Dani Lecher defeated Maurissa Weight and Dani Poirier of Wasatch, 6-4, 7-6. Katherine Davis and Julie Patterson defeated Lily Weterlin and Paige Crump, 6-3, 6-2.
The coach went on to say that her team has been dealing with a few ankle injuries that have been somewhat of a hindrance, but nothing major.
The Miners’ junior varsity squad defeated Wasatch 8-2 in doubles matches.
The tough stretch of games continues for the Miners’ after Juan Diego and the St. George Invitational as they will be meeting up with Grantsville and Judge Memorial the following week.
“It’ll be a tough, busy month,” McMahon said.
