A week after struggling at a tournament in Roosevelt, the Park City High School boys’ golf team made it a distant memory.
At the Soldier Hollow Silver Course in Charleston Thursday, the Miners shot a combined 304, winning the tournament by a combined 23 strokes, which now puts their Region 10 lead at a 61.
Head coach George Murphy said it was his team’s best outing of the 2010 season.
Wasatch finished second with 327, followed by Carbon at 332 and Union with 335.
Park City had seven of 10 golfers shoot in the 70s. Justin Shluker shot an even par 72. Shluker and teammate Michael Coopman (78) are currently No. 1 and No. 2 in region play, respectively.
Rounding out the Miners who shot in the 70s were Brian Schwerin (76), Ben Harries (78) Andrew Method, (78), Matt Vanleeuwen (79) and Ryan Kearns (79).
The last region tournament of the season is next Thursday at East Bay Golf Course in Provo.
Park City tennis team continues to roll
The Park City High School girls’ tennis team is in St. George this weekend to take on some of its toughest competition of the 2010 season. The Miners will take on the likes of Desert Hills, Pine View and Cedar this weekend.
In preparation for the St. George Invitational, the Miners bested Ben Lomond and Juan Diego this last week.
On Tuesday, Park City defeated Ben Lomond in Ogden, 5-0. Singles players Stormy Dvorak, Solveig Karlsen and Alex Oriente won handily. The Miners doubles teams followed suit. The No. 1 pair of Katherine Davis and Dani Lecher won 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 continued with Julie Patterson and Kara Johnson winning 6-1, 6-1.
Wednesday against Juan Diego, the singles players continued on their streak, winning all three matches.
Head coach Lori McMahon singled out her singles players as being fantastic.
“Stormy Dvorak faced an old nemesis of hers and just totally got in her head,” she said. “Solveig (Karlsen) is consistent and Alex Oriente is just as consistent. She’s a wall,” McMahon continued.
Park City won the meet 4-1.
The No. 1 tandem of Davis and Lecher dropped a match to their Soaring Eagle opponents, 6-2, 7-5.However, the No. 2 pair of Johnson and Patterson won 6-1, 6-2.
McMahon wanted to point out that her junior varsity squad has been on an absolute tear this season and cannot wait for the future.
“JV is just cleaning everyone out,” she said. “It says a lot about the future of our team.”
