The Park City High School football team made sure of one thing Friday night.
It protected its home field.
The Miners improved to 2-0 at home on the 2010 season as they defeated visiting Manti, 28-22 at Dozier Field.
Quarterback Paul Flake had two rushing touchdowns and also threw for 199 yards, including a 31-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jono Schettler. Schettler had a huge night, hauling in five passes totaling in 131 yards.
Senior running back Blake Thorne made the most of his touches, using his elusive speed to get to the outside against the Templar defense. Thorne also added 84 yards on the ground and a touchdown on the evening.
The Park City defense was the story of the game. Since the Miner offense has a tendency to score on big plays, it leaves the defense on the field more often than not.
As the game went on, the Miner defense became stronger in stopping the versatile Templar rushing attack. Park City came up with stop after stop once Manti made it a six-point game early in the fourth quarter.
The Miners were able to utilize their own rushing attack of Flake and Thorne and ultimately killed the clock after having the ball the last four minutes of the game.
Park City has gone 2-3 in games leading up to region play, which opens up next Friday in Roosevelt against Union. The Cougars are 1-4 on the season, which also included a 47-6 loss to Manti on Aug. 27.
