Miners get first region win of 2010 season
The Park City High School football team went on the road and earned its first region win of the season, defeating Union 28-14 in Roosevelt Friday. The Miners are now 3-2 on the season and travel to Carbon this Friday to look to compound on their two-game winning streak.
Quarterback Paul Flake passed for 277 yards. Junior wideout Jono Schettler was the beneficiary, reeling in two touchdowns to go with 190 yards on 11 receptions.
Running back Blake Thorne added on a 42-yard touchdown run, while Robert Cashel returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown. The Miners will be in Price Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
PCHS cross-country team goes up against the big boys
Park City High School cross-country team head coach Jeff Wyant took his team to Boise, Idaho, to face off against some of the best teams in the Northwest Saturday.
His Miners did what they’ve done all season: competed and placed well amongst high-caliber teams.
The girls’ squad took third overall, while the boys’ took seventh.
Park City had six girls finish in under 20 minutes in the 5K race, with eight boys finishing in under 18 minutes.
“We did pretty well,” Wyant said.
While most of the teams came from the Northwest, Wyant said Utah teams was well represented. Among them were of 5A Davis and Alta, with 4A Timpanogos, and fellow 3A schools Ogden and Judge Memorial.
“There were 140 schools there total, and about 20 of them were from Utah,” Wyant said.
The coach said that this was one of his team’s most important races this season as it involved more top-flight programs.
“Competition wise, yeah, it was good,” Wyant said. “But we’ve been running all the big meets with all the big schools for a while now.”
With the season winding down, the Miners have a home meet this Saturday morning. The Park City Invitational will start with the girls’ teams racing at 10 a.m., and the boys’ starting at 10:45.
The race, which is at Quinn’s Junction, is also open to the public, with a public division 5K taking place on the course. The run will take about 45 minutes, Wyant said. Registration for the race goes from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and the race will start at about 9:15.
Park City junior varsity tennis squad is flawless in 2010
While the Miners’ varsity girls’ tennis squad has been making headlines with its impressive play this season, the junior varsity has followed suit, and then some.
The JV just keep winnings. And winning. And winning.
The Park City JV team has won every match so far this season, and last weekend’s tournament in St. George was no different.
The Miners won the tournament, 24-21.
The pair of Kelsey Bothner and Lexi Clukey won the doubles tournament.
The unblemished streak continued into region play, as Park City defeated rival Wasatch in Heber City to win JV regional tournament.
Natalie Frost won her finals match against her Wasatch opponent, 9-8, earning first place.
