The Park City High School girls’ tennis team is ready for its biggest weekend of 2010.
The 3A tennis state championships are this Friday and Saturday at Brigham Young University.
The Miners are heading into the tournament with a bit of a chip on their shoulder.
After dominating competition for much of the season, Park City took second place at the Northern Divisional Tournament held at Coach Mike’s Tennis Academy in Salt Lake City last weekend.
The participating teams consisted of all the northern 3A teams: Wasatch, Morgan, Bear River, Ben Lomond, Judge, Juan Diego, Park City and Grantsville.
Judge took first, with the Miners taking second.
Freshman Solveig Karlsen continued to shine as she won the No. 2 singles division. She will head into state as the top seed in the northern division.
Karlsen won the first set 6-2, and went down 5-2 early in the second set. She came back to win the second set, 7-5.
“She played a great match against the Judge player who she has lost to in their two previous meetings,” head coach Lori McMahon said.
No. 1 player Stormy Dvorak took first place in her divisional, while No. 3 singles player Alex Oriente fell to her Judge opponent, and took second.
The Miners’ No. 1 doubles pair, Katherine Davis and Dani Lecher, took third place in the tournament, while the No. 2 tandem of Julie Patterson and Kara Johnson took second after losing a tough match to Judge.
“I was very excited to see everyone play so well,” McMahon said, “And I was extremely impressed by the effort that I saw every one of these girls exhibit out on the courts. This is a very special, highly motivated team. We will be working hard this entire week to prepare for state this weekend. The girls are ready to put it all together and play some great tennis at the final big tournament of the season. They have had an incredible year so far, and I know they will keep it going.”
