North Summit’s season ends in double OT playoff loss
The season is over for the North Summit High School football team.
A heartbreaking 20-14 double-overtime loss to South Sevier at home last Friday sent the Braves empty their lockers for the season.
North Summit finished 4-6 in 2010, and has yet to return to the dominance of the 2008 and 2007 2A championship seasons when it was the class of 2A football in Utah.
The Rams enacted revenge for a 36-8 Braves’ win on Sept. 3 in Coalville.
After a scoreless first half, South Sevier found its way onto the board with a two-yard touchdown run by Austin Manwill. North Summit answered with a touchdown of its own when quarterback Keegan McQueen punched it in from one yard out to tie the game at 6-6 in the third quarter.
There wouldn’t be another score until the first overtime session, when Manwill bullied his way into the end zone yet again, this time from four-yards out, to put the Rams up 14-6 after a successful two-point conversion by Wyatt Argyle.
With their backs to the wall, the Braves answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass from McQueen to Preston Pace. Nathan Rees converted the two-point attempt, knotting things up at 14-14 heading into the second overtime.
North Summit received the ball first in the second overtime, but was stonewalled by the Rams’ defense. South Sevier went on to win the game on Manwill’s third rushing touchdown of the evening.
Wildcats prepare for another deep playoff run in 2A
While its county rival bowed out of the 2A state playoffs in the first round, the South Summit High School football team has its sights set on a trip to another state championship game.
First, the Wildcats will have to claw their way past the Beaver Beavers this Saturday at Wildcat Stadium in Kamas.
Beaver (7-3) leads the all-time series against South Summit 8-7, but the Beavers will have their hands full when going up against the likes of Levi Thompson and Trevor Rydalch.
Thompson is one of the top rushers in 2A, spearheading an attack that average nearly 38 points per game. Thompson has 1,081 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to lead the Wildcats.
Beaver will look to attack the Wildcat defense with running back Slade Edwards, who leads the team with 10 touchdowns on 1,023 yards rushing. He averages 113.7 yards per game.
Kickoff is Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats (11-2) are hoping to earn a rematch with the San Juan Broncos, who defeated South Summit 7-0 in last year’s 2A state title game; not to mention this year’s showdown in Kamas, which ended in a 26-6 victory for San Juan on Sept. 17.
