Park City is accepting applications from people who want to serve on the Historic Preservation Board, a City Hall panel that holds some authority over building designs in Old Town.

There is one opening on the seven-member panel. The position had been held by Adam Opalek. He stepped down in December based on scheduling conflicts with his work, the Planning Department said.

One application had been filed by the middle of the week.

The Historic Preservation Board becomes involved in disputes about building designs between property owners and City Hall staffers. If a property owner disagrees with a staff-level decision, an appeal may be filed to the panel.

The Historic Preservation Board also maintains Old Town building guidelines and keeps an inventory of historic properties in Park City. The panel considers whether properties are eligible for the inventory.

Regular Parkites rarely follow Historic Preservation Board business, but the influential preservation community monitors the goings-on in Old Town. There recently was a flare-up in the neighborhood after an old building on Park Avenue was torn down, prompting criticism from preservationists. Some members of the Historic Preservation Board questioned the City Hall process that led to the teardown.

Park City residency is not required to serve on the Historic Preservation Board, something that is required to serve on other City Hall panels. Members are paid $60 per meeting and receive Racquet Club benefits.

The Historic Preservation Board typically meets between 12 and 18 times each year, according to an advertisement announcing the opening. Meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month and when a meeting is needed.

The term that needs to be filled expires in July. The person who is selected would need to reapply for appointment to a full three-year term.

Applications are available at the Planning Department at the Marsac Building. The deadline for submitting applications is Jan. 17 at 5 p.m.
