It’s been so long since the Town Race Series was in full swing in Park City that most people can’t remember when it exactly stopped.

That all changes this afternoon.

For the first time in 20-plus years, the Town Race Series at Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) will be off and skiing today at 4 p.m. at the Eagle Race Arena.

Karen Korfanta, race department manager at PCMR, said the resort is thrilled to be able to host the event and that the race office has been filled with those inquiring about the series.

“It’s shaping up really well,” she said. “I can’t tell exactly how many entries we’ve had. I think it’s going to be really good. Everybody’s excited to come out.”

The series’ revival was promoted by people at both PCMR and the Park City Ski Team (PCST).

Jesse Hunt, PCST program director and general manager, envisioned the alpine ski community getting involved with such an event and is excited it’s finally coming to fruition.

“It’s happening,” he said. “Our goal is to get as many people out as we can.”

He also said that without the support of Gaddis Invesments and The Corner Store, both sponsors, the race series couldn’t have been made possible.

Hunt said they are hoping to have at least 75 competitors in the first race this afternoon and even more entrants in the next three competitions.

The races will be in a dual GS format which Hunt said will be “really fun” for racers. There will be an awards ceremony at the end of the races for the top-three finishers in the male, female and team categories.

Co-ed teams are welcome and the race will be judged using the NASTAR handicap.

“Teams have been trickling in,” he said. “But we encourage people to sign up earlier online.”

Hunt and Korfanta know there won’t be a gargantuan turnout for the first race, but are eager to get things going.

“There’s a lot of action going on right now in town,” Hunt said. “We’ve got a packed house and we’d like to shift the focus a bit.”

Twenty-something years after the last race, the series is finally back in Park City and alpine skiers will have a shot to show fellow racers what kind of hill skills they have.

“The resort’s excited about it,” Korfanta said. “We’ve seen lots of strong interest. The resort is ready.”

The races will run from 4 to 6:30 p.m. tonight. Hunt and the Park City Ski Team will be at a registration booth for those who wish to sign up for the races.
