Miners rebound, annihilate ALA
Apparently, the Miners took out their frustrations on Region 10 foe American Leadership Academy. After enduring their worst loss of the 2010-11 season to rival Wasatch on Jan. 21 in Heber, the Miners bounced back in a big way, walloping the Eagles 75-32 Wednesday in Spanish Fork.
Twelve Miners were penciled in the scorer’s sheet as junior point guard Heath Vincent lead the way with 21 points, eight assists and five steals. Junior swingman Britton Buford chipped in 11 points, five steals and four assists, while junior guard Jono Schettler scored 10 points and notched six assists.
Up next for Park City (12-4) is a visit to Union (4-11) on Feb. 1. The Miners defeated the Cougars 66-60 at home on Jan. 14. Tip-off is at 5:15 p.m. in Roosevelt.
Miners hockey team looking to rebound
The young Park City High School hockey team is looking to get back in the win column after dropping its last two games. Most recently, the Miners lost 7-3 to Riverton on Jan. 26 at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns.
Freshman center Duncan Morris opened up the scoring for Park City with junior Ethan McIntire and freshman TJ Mayo following suit.
Now at 4-7, Park City sits in 11th place in its 13-team division with one game remaining on the season.
Park City swimmers edged by Wasatch in Region meet, prep for state
The Park City High School swim team is the defending 3A champion, but it has some work to do after rival Wasatch edged out the Miners in the Region 10 championship meet at Ecker Hill Aquatic Center on Jan. 22.
Standouts for the Miners in the Region 10 swim meet were Ali Murphy, who won the girls’ 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, Marissa Bell, who won the girls’ 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard intermedley, and Hailey Shand, who won both the girls’ 100 and 50-yard freestyle.
Dusty Ragland won both boys’ 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.
Wasatch (combined 1146) beat out Park City (1010) for the region title. The Miners now prepare to defend their 3A state title next weekend, Feb. 4-5, at BYU.
South Summit
Wildcats’ streak reaches 11
The South Summit High School boys’ basketball team just keeps on winning.
The winning streak, now 11 games, comes after the Wildcats started the season 1-4 with a grueling preseason schedule. Led by seniors Levi Thompson (11.5 points per game), Trevor Rydalch (10.6), Parker Anderson (10.1) and Jordan Page (10), South Summit has gone on a tear.
Most recently, the Wildcats dismantled Layton Christian 70-46 Tuesday in Layton. Thompson had a game-high 21 points and drained five 3-pointers.
South Summit’s next test will come on Feb. 2 at Waterford (9-5).
Lady Cats roaring with eight straight wins
After dropping eight straight games, South Summit High School girls’ basketball team has responded with a winning streak that now stands at eight games.
With no player averaging more than seven points per game, the Lady Cats are led by Abby Peterson (6.71 points per game), Paige Peterson (6.29) and BreeAnn Buckner (6.8).
South Summit (9-8) is undefeated in region play and has a showdown looming with rival North Summit the last game of the season on Feb. 10 in Coalville.
North Summit
Braves looking for consistency
The North Summit High School boys’ basketball team (8-8) is searching for a way to end the season a winning note. After enduring back-to-back region loses to South Summit (Jan. 14) and Waterford (Jan. 19), the Braves thrashed Rockwell 77-17 on Jan. 26.
With five games remaining, the Braves need its three star players to lead the way.
Keegan McQueen averages 17 points per game to go along with 7.5 assists per game and 3.5 steals. Sharpshooter Makay Fristrup is averaging 12.6 points and has drilled 45 3-pointers so far this season. Forward Preston Pace scores 10.5 per game and averages 5.3 rebounds.
Lady Braves have strong region record
The North Summit High School Lady Braves basketball team, now 8-8, has rattled off three straight wins and is clearly one of the better teams in the region. Much like its rival, North Summit has a balanced attack from Kaitlyn Rowser (8.8 points per game), Samantha Nicholes (6.6) and Cassidy Stephens (6.5)
The Lady Braves are coming off a 56-2 stomping of Rockwell on Jan. 26 and now travel to Rowland Hall on Feb. 1 to see if they can add to their region win streak.
