The 2011 campaign came to a sweltering end Saturday afternoon in St. George for the Park City boys’ soccer team.

The Miners lost to undefeated and No. 1 overall seed Desert Hills 4-0.

“We’ve been practicing in 40 degrees,” said head coach Caro Caro. “It was 98 degrees at the time of the game.

“We started pretty good, touching the ball, but the heat was just overwhelming.”

The Miners and Thunder were deadlocked for most of the first half, but once Desert Hills broke through, a quick second goal followed and things began to collapse for Park City.

“After their first goal, things just went down the drain again, which is pretty typical of my team this year,” Caro said. “We had no other choice than to go on the attack and we neglected their counterattack.”

The Thunder finished with two more goals in the second half en route to ousting the Miners.

“The kids played their hearts out, but it was just too late to come back,” Caro said.

Park City finishes the season 11-5-1. An 11-win season is an accomplishment for any team and any coach and Caro said he is pleased with the overall results from the season.

“I was very satisfied,” he said. “The kids had flashes of really good soccer.”

Ten seniors say goodbye to the program, some of whom were part of the 2009 3A state championship team. Caro said it is tough to bid adieu to kids he’s coached for quite some time, but it happens every year and he has to look toward the future of the program.

“We do have talent all around from freshman to JV to varsity,” he said.

“We are preparing ourselves for the future generation. I’ve been paying very close attention to the underclasses, making sure they have the same style of play, that quick kind of attack. I’m definitely certain this program this is going to have another good team next year and the years to come. That’s what I expect. We’re very, very positive on that aspect.”

Park City loses its leading scorer in Anthony Alcox, who finished with 16 goals this year, forward Brian Park and midfielders Eric Laufer, Mitch VonPuttkamer, Sam Williams and defender Wade Crowther.

But Caro does have some young talent returning.

Sophomores Garrett Bullough and Brad Mulick will be supported by juniors Alejandro Viera, Keenan McCall, Matt Stevens and Michael Capone.

“I just keep looking for talent in the underclasses,” he said. “That’s why I attend the JV games and the freshman games. If the kid is good and above average, I want to prepare him (for varsity). I want to see how they match up and I test them. I put them in tough situations against bigger guys.

“It’s about now, rather than waiting for the now.”
