The band Poco, a favorite of the flower power generation, will perform two shows on one night at the Egyptian Theater on Main Street, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Though the group has had many different members over its 40-plus year history, is still going strong with the country-rock genre it created back in the late sixties. Formed from the collapse of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band Buffalo Springfield, members Richie Furay and Jim Messina enlisted Rusty Young, George Grantham and Randy Meisner to form Poco in 1968.
Poco changed members throughout the ensuing years and even broke up for a while in 1984, yet Rusty Young and Paul Cotton remained at the core of the band to carry on the name and music.
In 2010, a new Poco era dawned led by Rusty Young, Jack Sundrud and George Lawrence with additional musicians. The band has always maintained its musical superiority and this new incarnation will continue to be musically superior with a foot in the past, present and future. As Rusty Young says, “Hang on, this could be quite a ride.”
Rusty Young is the last remaining band member in the current iteration of Poco, and is the only band member to have played on every Poco album and at every live show.
Rusty Young is credited with revolutionizing pedal steel guitar playing, both in broadening the range of its application and in creating a new variety of its sonic possibilities, winning Guitar Player magazine’s venerated poll for “Best Pedal Steel Guitarist” award so many times it enshrined him in its Hall of Fame.
Poco will play Saturday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main St. Reserved seating tickets are $35.
