The North Summit School District has hired Russ Hendry of Blanding, to take Jerre Holmes position as high school principal.

Holmes assumed the position of North Summit superintendent earlier this summer.

Hendry said he found the position online and it looked like a great opportunity.

“I think I’m just looking forward to the community and the school traditions and working with the kids. It’s going to be a great thing,” he said.

Hendry said he is in the process of selling his house in Blanding and moving to the district with his wife, Kirsten, daughter, Anne, who will be starting sixth-grade and son, Adam, who will be starting second-grade this August.

He said the kids are sad to be leaving Blanding, but they are excited about the adventure.

Hendry said he will be leaving his assistant principal position in the San Juan School District in Blanding after seven years and added that his previous jobs in education have prepared him for his new role.

“Hopefully we can get the kids excited about learning and producing grades, and making sure all their needs are met,” he said.

Hendry said he’s not planning any earth-shattering changes for North Summit this year.

“I think we’re going to go with the plans that have been laid and try to implement as effectively as we can and adjust as we need,” he said.

Jerre Holmes, North Summit superintendent, said the district had a screening committee, including staff and parents, who narrowed 25 applicants down to four for the position.

“We think he’ll be a great fit for our school and community. He’s worked with rural districts throughout his career, so he understands,” Holmes said.

With his own experience as principal, Holmes said he’ll offer Hendry suggestions when needed.

“I won’t micro manage him. I’ll certainly give him advice, but more when he asks for it. It will be a balance,” Holmes said.

According to Holmes, he’s already enjoying his new role as superintendent.

“Obviously our biggest challenge right now is financial so I’m learning on the fly. We have a great business manager who is getting me up to speed,” he said.

Holmes said the district has some new ideas in mind, but right now he’s focusing on opening the schools for the year.

North Summit teachers will return to work on Aug. 23. Students will arrive on Aug. 25.
