With summer vacation coming to a close, the South Summit School District will hold registration days for new and returning students.
Teachers and administrators will be on hand Aug. 16 through 17 at the high school. Seniors can register on Aug. 16 from 8 to 10 a.m., juniors from 10 a.m. to noon and new students from 1 to 2 p.m.
Sophomores can register on Aug. 17 from 8 to 10 a.m., freshmen from 10 a.m. to noon and new students from 1 to 2 p.m.
According to Troy Coil, South Summit’s vice principal, students will be required to pay a $30 fee for class dues and $25 for additional class fees. He said other fees may apply to student athletes.
Coil said there will be time built into the bell system, on the second and fourth Monday of each month this year, that will give parents and teachers the opportunity to meet. The consultation time will replace parent-teacher conferences.
“In a lot of cases parents bring their students to school. We want parents to, instead of dropping their student off, park their car and come in and meet with teachers and with the students too,” he said.
Coil said there will also be a pilot intervention program implemented this year, which is modeled after a similar plan Wasatch High School.
He explained that following each block period there will be a 15-minute interval, on Tuesday through Friday, for teachers to meet with students.
“If you’re a teacher you have the opportunity to meet with the kids. It’s mostly for academic reasons, if a student is missing work or failed a test. It gives the teachers a ton of flexibility to do whatever they choose,” Coil said.
He said that students who are missing homework assignments or have a C- or below will be required to stay for intervention. But those students who aren’t missing assignments will be free to go, teacher permitting.
“There is a lot of incentive now for students to get their work in. I think it’s going to be interesting to see it in action and see how our students respond,” Coil said.

South Summit Middle School registration
South Summit Middle School will host its back-to-school night on Aug. 18. Orientation for new students and incoming 5th-graders will begin at 7 p.m., and returning students can attend the school-wide open house from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to visit with teachers.

Registration for South Summit Elementary School students will be open any time during school office hours from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parents need to provide their child’s birth certificate and get the necessary immunizations.
