Lori McMahon summed it up as “a good, long team bus ride to Roosevelt.” The Park City High School girls’ tennis team traveled to Union Tuesday to face the Cougars, playing a new region rival for the very first time.

This is the first year Union High School has had a girls’ tennis program.

The Miners conquered the Cougars 5-0 in a varsity matchup that McMahon said was “very fun, but very hot.” Every match featured a Park City victory in two sets.

Singles No. 1 player, sophomore Solveig Karlsen, led the way defeating Barbara Gillespie 6-2, 6-1. Julie Patterson and Kara Johnson, both seniors and Park City’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, each defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

“We made history,” McMahon joked. “It’s just good to see girls out there (Union) keeping busy and playing tennis. We loved helping them out with scoring and all that. They’re getting it; they’ve got a good coach.

“It was good to see a program finally starting up for Union.”

Park City’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Dani Lecher and Kenna Tychsen defeated Union’s Hanna Willis and Rachelle Costello 6-0, 6-0. The Miners’ No. 2 doubles duo of Natalie Frost and Lauren Weed bested Ali Ross and Elizabeth Richardson, 6-1, 6-0.

McMahon said she is focused on getting her doubles teams varsity and junior varsity to work together and become more familiar with one another.

“It’s tough to play another team when it’s hard to keep a rhythm going that team’s just starting out,” she said. “My thing this week has been formulating the JV and varsity doubles teams, meshing a little bit better, getting them to work a little bit better.

We’re working on confidence and positive attitudes.”

She also said she has been working on the little things with each member of her squad.

“We’re working with the singles girls, working on ball placement, setting up points a little bit better with our ball placement,” she said.

The Miners are in Ogden this weekend for the Ogden Invitational tennis tournament. McMahon said she expects her group to face some tough teams, including Bear River and Weber.

McMahon said her Miners are also very excited for next Tuesday’s match against Skyview.

Why? It’ll be played on Park City turf, something that has been somewhat foreign recently due to construction at the Park City Racquet Club.

“That’ll be fun,” she said. “We’ve got three home matches this season, and the (Park City) Racquet Club was kind enough to let us have five courts Tuesday.”

Park City’s match against Skyview is slated to start at 3 p.m. Tuesday on the Park City Racquet Club’s outdoor courts.
