Canyons Resort finally has a golf course, sort of.
In an effort to expand its summer offerings, the resort opened a putting course this week. It is located on the ski beach on the hill used as a children’s training slope in winter.
But there are no fiberglass Matterhorns or gaping clown faces, said Canyons managing director Mike Goar.
It was designed with the finest turf by people who build private putting facilities for expert golfers, he said.
“You can actually hone your putting skills,” he said.
The course has 18 holes for a par 50. The holes range from 19 to 54 feet in length. The turf is synthetic matting backfilled with silica sand exposing just the end of the fibers, said Canyons spokesperson Caitlin Martz.
“It performs and rolls similarly to a natural putting green,” she said.
Goar said the main idea was to increase the energy on the ski beach.
“The concert series has been a big hit; we’re adding zip lines and a bike park. This was one of those things we could add that is really affordable for families and fun in the late afternoon or early summer evenings,” Goar said.
Rounds are $8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. So far the course has been so busy Goar is worried they may need to ask for tee times.
It is located near The Farm restaurant, and planter boxes providing landscaping for the course will contain herbs and spices the restaurant can cut for use in recipes, Martz said.
There are inviting sitting areas near the water feature and grassy areas comfortable for lounging, Goar added.
The designers were going for “refined ruralism,” Martz said. Situated near The Farm, the course has a tall, model windmill, of course.
The hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily with lights for night-time play.
