Jack Mahoney, owner the building at 751 Main Street, confirmed Thursday that Stanfield Fine Art is moving out of the property and that District Gallery, formerly on Iron Horse Drive, is moving into the unit next door vacated by Baffin Footwear.
Mahoney said Stanfield was not paying rent.
DeVon Stanfield, owner of the gallery, said there was a misunderstanding over how much was owed, but it could have been worked out had he wanted to stay. However, Stanfield has become a full-time artist again and is no longer interested in running a gallery.
“We made a mutual agreement to end the relationship. It was clear to them I had more passion for my art career than running a gallery, and they should have a tenant who is passionate about running a gallery. It worked out best for everybody,” he said.
It was a great 13 years, he said, and the gallery enjoyed great community support.
“I want to give a heartfelt thanks to Park City, to the children who painted on our floor over the years and the support we received for our events,” he said.
Stanfield Fine Art pieces are still available through a liquidation sale on the gallery’s website at www.stanfieldfineart.com, he added.
District Gallery owner Karen Alvarez confirmed she will be moving from Iron Horse Drive to the space on the corner of Main Street and 7th Street.
Mahoney predicted he will have a new tenant for the Stanfield space by the end of next week. He currently has five interested parties. The day he announced its vacancy, he received three telephone calls, he said.
“I’ve never had trouble filling that building,” he said.
There are also negotiations to make the space a permanent venue for the Sundance Institute to use during its annual film festival, he said.
