Although Peter Baxter has been directing the Slamdance Film Festival these past 18 years, he still hasn’t stopped his first love, filmmaking.

In fact, Slamdance will screen his new project, “Wild in the Streets” this year tonight, Jan. 25, at the Treasure Mountain Inn.

The 82-minute documentary feature is about the origins of rugby, soccer and football. The soundtrack includes works from composer Matt McKenna and the bands Oasis, the Duke Spirit and Mercury Rev.

Actor Sean Bean of “Lord of the Rings” and “Game of Thrones” is the narrator.

“I’ve been continuing to make films,” Baxter said during an interview with The Park Record. “I usually produce, but this one I directed and it’s going to be shown as a special screening.”

A special screening means the film will not be in competition.

“Many people may ask us why I would submit a film into the festival because we have always tried to create a level playing field for all of our filmmakers,” Baxter said. “So we created the Special Screenings section and developed and curated this section for our Slamdance alumni.

“We think that’s very important because a lot of those filmmakers can lend support to the competitions and they have a lot of knowledge to share,” Baxter said. “I’m very excited and proud to be screening this film.”

“Wild in the Streets” is a film Baxter has been making for quite some time and documents thousands of locals from the town of Ashbourne, England, who annually renew the longest-running sports rivalry in the world.

The action takes place on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday where these everyday athletes compete in a game called Shrovetide Football, Baxter said.

“The game originates from two medieval communities what lived on opposite sides of the river Henmore,” he said. “They are known as the Up’ards and Down’ards.”

The object of the game is to get a four-pound ball to one of two goals that are approximately three miles apart, he said.

Baxter found it fitting to have Bean, who is an Ashbourne local, to be the narrator.

“Sean was raised not very far from where we made the film, so he was a natural,” he said. “He’s got a great voice, too.”
