An agriculture burn in Coalville destroyed a home Sunday afternoon when a wind shift redirected the fire and engulfed the structure in flames.
The North Summit Fire Department responded to the home, 606 E. Chalk Creek Rd, on Sunday at approximately 3:25 p.m., according to Tyler Rowser, North Summit Fire public information officer.
Rowser said the property owner was performing an agriculture burn when the wind shifted the fire toward the structure. No one was in the home at the time.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire after nearly an hour, but the fire had spread beneath the structure. It was completely destroyed and is a total loss, Rowser said.
No other damage was reported to any surrounding properties.
One firefighter was transported to an area hospital due to smoke inhalation. Rowser said he is “good condition,” but could not release any other information.
According to Rowser, it is the responsibility of the person igniting an agriculture burn to be “responsible for keeping it under control,” adding that in unincorporated Summit County, property owners are required to notify the Summit County Dispatch Center before commencing any burning.
“We want to make sure people are aware of that,” Rowser said.
No citations were issued to the property owner.
