I wanted to voice my support for the proposed development at 220 King Road. There is no need for me to rehash other points of support made by others, but I agree with Pat Sweeney’s points.
I wanted to address the big picture and the unique opportunity.
The Park City Land Management Code is in a constant state of change, driven by well-intentioned individuals, and it has become to some extent an experiment. To some extent, the code is a compromise between what was there, what is attainable, legal and a long evolution-history-attempts to correct mistakes in the code’s end product. In some cases, this has not served the town well.
To the extent possible let’s not focus only on the code, let’s focus on what is good for Park City.
There is a very unique opportunity here. Matthew Prince has purchased a unique parcel, which sits on the fringe of the historic district and would be well suited as a modern design with threads of the mining history (the existing improvements on it do not serve the town well). He has the will and means to fund this project, and has selected the right team.
Kundig Olsen is the best architectural firm to study and design a home that fits into this setting (both historic and environmentally). There simply is no one better suited. Kundig Olsen is renowned for their approach and sensitivity.
Somehow the fact that Matthew can and is welling put forward significantly sums toward this home and this town is being viewed negatively.
Contrary, it is Matthew’s ability and willingness to fund the study, design and have the ability to execute the build the home that is one of of the must significant benefits.
So many great designs are never built due to becoming out of reach for most people (even the unlimited budgets go over budget).
Park City has the opportunity the have a very significant architectural marvel that fits in its environment (setting, nature, location and history) that will showcase great architecture and Park City.
As a neighbor, a resident of Park City, and a professional in the design and development. I strongly support this project and respectfully request that you work with and find a way to approve this project as the visionaries see it and not some compromise that makes everyone feel as is if they got something. Let’s realize the full potential.
Some of the significant architecture existing today would not exist without great architects, setting and and individuals willing to fund such vision’s in shot an opportunity. Please do not kill it or butcher it.
