There is more to Memorial Day than dishwasher sales at RC Willey’s, the day before you can wear white or the kickoff barbecue to summer. Not to be confused with Veterans Day, which is celebrated on Nov. 11, honors all of America’s military veterans, both alive and deceased.
Memorial Day is a commemoration dedicated to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. Veterans Day is celebrated; Memorial Day is observed.
The origins of Memorial Day go back to the Civil War. I remember my grandmother referring to Memorial Day as its original name, Decoration Day.

My favorite movie during the Memorial Day weekend is “The Longest Day.” This 1962 historical classic (in black and white, subtitled in French and German) depicts the epic allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944. While the movie obviously has scenes of combat, it is not graphic.
