This is in response to a letter printed in the May 17 Park Record.
I take issue with Sherry Elshaug’s use of the word vandalism. I never saw that word in print and I never heard it on the radio.
What the students and their adult adviser did, I would call a bit of social action. It was a protest against an extremely hateful state act against the gay and trans people. They put paper up for two hours and then took it down. They called attention in a very mild way to a very new disturbing law.
Personally, I thought it was fabulous and I have a whole bag of small pink heart-shaped pins that say “someone you love is gay or lesbian” to donate to them.
I can only assume that you do not know any gay or trans adults or children. I think if you did, you would feel differently about what happened last week.
May I suggest that you go on Summit Pride’s website and go to some of their events and meet some of the people who are your neighbors, people just like you. You might then have a different attitude towards what happened, which was not vandalism.
