As the height of the bike season approaches, there is a significant need for improved bike-pedestrian courtesy.
Too often people riding bikes, especially those getting “exercise” riding a full throttle electric bike downhill well in excess of the 15 mph speed limit, need to slow down when approaching walkers.
At 15 mph (or even way less), a collision with a walker causes serious injuries. All bikes have brakes, and when bike riders approach walkers on the trail, the brakes need to be applied.
Also, too often when a group of walkers are using the Rail Trail, they walk side by side blocking the entire width of the trail, creating a dangerous situation for bikers trying to pass. Walkers need to stay on one side of the trail, allowing bikes to pass safely.
A little common sense will go a long way to improve safety and make the use of the Rail Trail fun for all.
