Heaps of used books will go on sale this weekend during the Friends of the Park City Library’s annual Miners Day Weekend book sale.
The event runs Sunday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 1, at the library, 1255 Park Ave., said

“The sale takes place on the third floor in the Community Room and room 301,” she said. “The library is open for regular operations on Sunday, but it will be closed, except for the third floor on Monday for the book sale.”
Sunday’s sale hours start at 8 a.m. for Friends of the Park City Library members and then 10 a.m. for the general public. And as an added bonus, Lucky Ones Coffee at the library will be open on Sunday.
Friends of the Park City Library memberships can be purchased by visiting tinyurl.com/3xcm77v8 at the door during the sale or through a QR code that will be set up during different library events, Lanigan said.
Memberships come with benefits, including early access to book sales and invitations to free, special events, she said.
Monday’s hours run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with a Tote Bag Happy Hour, which really runs two hours from 2-4 p.m., said Rachel Sahlman, Friends of the Park City Library board member.
“People can fill a provided Friends of the Park City Library tote bag for $15,” she said.
Otherwise, book prices are $1 for all children’s books, $2 for adult paperbacks and $3 for adult hardcovers, Lanigan said.
“We will also have puzzles and games on sale for $2, and the puzzles usually are gone on the first day,” she said.
Cash payments will be accepted, along with Venmo. Credit cards can be used for purchases totaling more than $10.
Book categories include fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, picture books and more. Since the Friends’ last used book sale during the Fourth of July, the public has stepped up to donate more books, Lanigan said.
“This year we did a little extra community communication by letting people know they could donate their books, and the library got inundated,” she said. “People would come in with bags and boxes. They were so happy the library was taking the books, because they didn’t know where to take them. It was pretty cool.”
The Miners Day Weekend sale works well on Monday, Sahlman said.
“We see a lot of people walking down the hill to City Park in the morning after the parade,” she said. “We have our signage out so people can see where the book sale is. And we get local residents and a lot of folks from out of town who are looking for something to do.”
The money raised from the book sale will supplement the library’s annual budget, according to Sahlman.
“All book sale proceeds go directly to the library for programs and services,” she said. “It’s an interesting time in the library field because of changes in federal funding.”
Some of those programs include extending the library’s collection of the latest e-book and graphic novels, which reduces the wait time for popular titles; enriching and expanding community programming such as the Local Speaker Series, the One Book One Community event and local artist receptions; providing Spanish-language audio and wonder books and supporting patrons’ productivity by helping fund the library’s Business Center, the remote-meeting equipment and the 3D Printer.
“So, we hope this is a successful sale, because we’ll probably be tapped to make up for some shortfalls in the near future,” Sahlman said.
The sale is a win-win situation for the community and library, Lanigan said.
“It’s a great way for people to get some great books, and the money is going directly to library programs and services,” she said.
Those who can’t attend the book sale this weekend still can contribute to the cause by visiting the library during regular business hours, Sahlman said.
“We have a Friends of the Park City Library wall filled with books that is right across from the reception desk, and people can buy books all year long,” she said.
Library staff and volunteers continually restock the wall, Lanigan said.
“These books are from the same donation pool, and the books sell for the same prices as our formal book sales,” she said.
