The Gestapo was Nazi Germany’s infamous political police force. They were responsible for protecting the regime from its supposed racial and political enemies. Its main responsibilities were coordinating the deportation of Jews to the ghettos, and concentration camps.
Thus, deja vu. If this history lesson seems somewhat familiar, it is because our present federal administration has expanded the duties of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The only difference is that the ICE police force is targeting the Hispanic population instead of Jews.
Unfortunately, innocent Hispanics are being arrested along with illegal immigrants, thus making the situation more like the Nazi regime tactics. Many have already been deported to other countries without due process. Due process has been the hallmark of our judicial system which separates democratic countries from autocratic regimes.
The federal administration is considering deploying ICE agents and more national guardsmen to major cities in response to what it identifies as an increase in crime. This move involves the potential presence of ICE officers, military personnel and military equipment in urban areas. Some have questioned whether local police departments have been effective in addressing crime, but there is ongoing debate about whether using the military for policing duties aligns with their intended role in national defense.
For more than 250 years, American citizens have not experienced conditions like those described as a “police state” as much as in recent times. Some individuals attribute these changes to the current administration’s authoritarian style of governance. Others hold differing views regarding the impact on personal freedoms.
Currently, Congress has not used its oversight authority over the executive branch, leaving constitutional checks and balances unaddressed. If you want to influence America’s direction from an authoritarian form of governance back to a democratic posture, then vote your conscience in the upcoming midterm elections. God bless America!
