Two weeks ago on the Jordanelle Reservoir, the Park City Sailing Association hosted the 2025 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship. Not often an honor given by U.S. Sailing to mountain town reservoir-located organizations, Park City Sailing got to welcome 10 of the nation’s best amateur adult sailing teams onto its waters.
There were 10 races held over that weekend, with each team taking a turn in each of the organization’s J22 boats to ensure fairness. The Twin Cities Sailing Club would use their consistency amidst varying wind conditions to walk away with the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy. Park City Sailing would finish in fifth place.
Despite a finish that left the Park City team wanting more, they feel they represented the organization well. Park City Sailing is hoping this event is just the beginning of hosting large-scale competitions. They spent over a year preparing, and would love to host similar events, featuring community partners moving forward.
Deer Valley East Village, Urban Sailor Coffee and countless officials and volunteers helped get the Championship up-and-running. The feedback on both the action and off-the-water time was overwhelmingly positive.
“We’re really happy about how it went,” said Park City Sailing Executive Director Scott VerMerris. “We learned a lot.”
VerMerris said his organization seized the opportunity to “level-up.” He’s excited to continue racing big-time J22 events in the future.
“We were really proud to have people travel from around the country to come sail with us,” VerMerris said. “It’s exciting to show people Park City, too, and that we have this thriving sailing program going on here in the mountains and ski town. People were impressed.”
He went on: “We got so much experience in running a big event like this. We run regattas every year, but now we know how to do it at an even higher level, so this is what we want to do. … More opportunities to be on the map and show people that this is a thriving place down here are really great for us.”
