I was not surprised to read the news this morning that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to someone other than Donald Trump. Rather, it was awarded to Maria Corina Machado of Venezuela, in recognition of her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Unlike our GOP majority in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, which has done the opposite consistently, the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not succumb to the pressure of Donald Trump and give him what he wanted. Had they done so, they would have disgraced their organization and destroyed their credibility.
The list of reasons for Trump being a horrible person to receive the award is quite long, but I would like to mention a few: Following his loss in the 2020 presidential election, he incited a violent insurrection in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden as the winner. As soon as he was sworn in for his current term, he pardoned all participants convicted in that riot that we all watched on TV. He also watched it on TV, and did nothing to stop it.
Recently he has decided that our Department of Defense should now be called the Department of War, for God’s sake!
He is currently sending federal agents and National Guard troops into our own cities in defiance of our Constitution, saying we must fight the enemy within. It has become more and more apparent that the enemy within, in Trump’s mind, are those who disagree with him, including the free press.
Donald Trump is dishonest to the core, a complete narcissist, has aligned himself with Vladimir Putin, and only cares about himself. I don’t believe he truly cares about ending the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
I think he just wanted the Nobel Peace Prize. He had said that if he didn’t get it, it would be “a big insult to our country.” Giving it to him would have, in my opinion, provided a tremendous boost to his enormous ego and would have emboldened him in his quest for world dominance.
Not at all surprising that the Norwegian Nobel Committee has chosen to maintain their integrity, and honor the Nobel Peace Prize by awarding it to someone who deserves the honor of receiving it.
