The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fraud case after an Oakley man lost $100,000 in a bitcoin scam.
An individual in Oakley on Jan. 12 reported they were defrauded approximately $100,000 by someone who pretended to be a police captain, according to a shift report. The fake police captain requested the victim deposit several bitcoin transactions to pay court fines for allegedly missing jury duty.
Deputies are continuing to collect evidence in the case, which will be forwarded to investigators.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, Jan. 12, and Sunday, Jan. 18, including car theft, wrong-way driving and suspected DUI.
Saturday, Jan. 17
Deputies were dispatched to a Kimball Junction grocery store because a man and a woman were reported for stealing. The two individuals left the store in a car before deputies arrived, but a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted their vehicle and attempted to stop them. The driver refused to stop, and deputies initiated a pursuit. They used a precision immobilization technique to stop the car and arrested the two occupants.
Thursday, Jan. 15
Deputies responded to a vehicle theft in Oakley after the adult son of the car’s registered owner took the vehicle without permission. The son was found driving on U.S. 40, and deputies initiated a short pursuit, but they were able to “box in” the car without incident. The driver appeared to be intoxicated while he was being taken into custody. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was transported to the Summit County Jail. The vehicle’s owner recovered the car.
Wednesday, Jan. 14
Deputies stopped a vehicle in Summit Park after someone called Summit County Dispatch to complain of a car driving on the wrong side of the road. Deputies found the car in question and observed it failing to maintain its lane of travel. They stopped the vehicle, and the driver reportedly smelled of alcohol. Deputies also saw open containers of alcohol inside the car, and the driver showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test. The driver was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail.
