Steve Hegerfeld passed away at home, serenely, February 27th. He battled the devastating neuro-degenerative disorder Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy (PSP) for four years.
Growing up in Prairie DuSac, Wisconsin, Steve’s youth was all about speed: skis, bicycles, and fast cars and eventually motorcycles. He served his country with a pacific tour in the U.S. Navy then attended University of Wisconsin.
He moved to Park City in the early nineties, and married Joanna Charnes. Spa Mechanix was started, followed by The Spa Source which he co-owned for 25 years. He passed the business down to his friend and employee, Reazon Singer. Steve was a trusted local business owner.
Steve loved Park City and made the most of it as a four-season athlete: alpine, nordic, and skate skier, and golfer (landing a hole in one at Park City Golf Course), He was a master of road and mountain biking, competing in century rides. Basin Recreation members knew Steve as the “Gym Guy” who the younger generation emulated. He embraced everything that was fitness and nutrition, setting personal bests in the free weight gym well into his 70s. He still loved motorcycles, as comfortable riding, as he was fine tuning them. He worked hard, and enjoyed the life he built.
With his wry Wisconsin wit and ability to see the good in people, he was a uniquely fine person, appreciated by many. He was a dedicated husband, and champion of all of Joanna’s personal, professional, political, and theatrical endeavors.
Steve had a lot of loving friends and relatives. He is survived by his wife, Joanna Charnes, and his daughter, Stacie Bonham, his siblings Clyde Hegerfeld, Cris (Jon) Walton, Denise (Jim) Baier, Rick (Sandy Hegerfeld); step-son Jeffrey Rosenthal, grandsons Jacob Mortensen, Elijah Bonham, great grandsons Ryan and Sawyer, and many nieces and nephews. His sister Patty died in 2025.
