When Miners junior varsity golf team founder Jenny MacDougall took over the varsity team from longtime head coach George Murphy, she understood her team would be under a magnifying glass. 

Murphy led the team to state titles in 13 seasons, before moving into a more administrative role at Park City High School. He still coaches the Miners girls team, who are the defending state champions. 

MacDougall found success in her first year at the helm, leading Park City to third place at state last fall. She assumed a team last season which had graduated five of their six state players. Individual state champion Rawson Hardy was part of that graduating bunch, wrapping up his school work a year early to join Georgia Tech’s team. 

MacDougall said third place finishes at state, while impressive, aren’t the standard Murphy set for the program. She believes this year’s team, which returned four of their six state players, may just have what it takes to reach the mountaintop once more. The Miners won their home regional match at Park City Golf Course on Sept. 3. 

“The team is doing really well right now,” MacDougall said. “I like what we’re working with. … That was the first time that we’ve actually come in first at home in two years, so pretty significant. A big momentous win for the kids.”

Seniors Graham Morgan and Linus Einum are part of the returning group from last year’s state team. They led the efforts in the home win, shooting 73 and 75, respectively. 

“Linus Enum has been fantastic,” MacDougall said. “He’s been a returning varsity player several years now and a state competitor. He is probably our No. 1 contributor to the team right now. Some other repeat players from varsity and state last year that are also contributing are Dane Hays, who’s a junior, Hudson Darmstandler, he’s also a junior, and then Graham Morgan, who is a senior.”

As proof of her team’s strong depth, MacDougall also mentioned a breakout round of 74 from varsity newcomer and Park Record photo intern Jack Casebolt at the Miners’ most recent meet at River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy. Depth plays to her teams’ advantage, she said, because only top scores are counted at meets, so the more good scores, the better. Park City finished second to East, one of the top teams in 4A Region 8 alongside the Miners, at River Oaks last Wednesday.

“I think (Casebolt) is really settling into the regional tournaments and feeling comfortable,” MacDougall said. “And it shows. … He’s very talented.”

Park City had three more regional meets, including Thursday’s at Meadow Brook Golf Course in Taylorsville, and a regional championship before the state meet on Oct. 14 and 15 at Palisade Golf Course in Sterling. MacDougall believes having her players stay focused and committed to the game, even outside of the team’s practices and meets, will be a key to success at state. 

“Just to stay in a rhythm and stay connected with the game,” MacDougall said.  “If we can stay connected like that, it’s really going to help when you’re in a competitive setting. It puts it in perspective and reminds you that you have to battle for each stroke out there because it is all that matters.”

MacDougall said she’s always believed in this team’s ability to lift the championship trophy. She believes stacking strong results recently has the players starting to believe like she does.

The popular action sports property of the X Games transformed into the X Games League this summer with its first summer season, featuring skateboarding and BMX competitions. 

The XC New York club won the inaugural summer season, bolstered by their first-ever draft, which was held in mid-March at Cosm Los Angeles. 

On Wednesday night, the league returned to Cosm Los Angeles, this time with many of their top winter sports stars, for their inaugural winter season draft. There, four teams — XC Park City, XC Whistler, XC New York and XC Golden State — looked to assemble the best possible collections of skiers and snowboarders. 

Each team was required to draft five men and five women, and three of the 10 athletes had to be halfpipe competitors. Athletes will compete for points in each event at the three season stops in Aspen, Colorado, Calgary and Ruka, Finland, which will go toward determining the season-ending team champion and $500,000 prize, which is divided among the winner’s roster.

“X Games has spent 30 plus years with the moments; The moments that have defined what the best of the best looks like,” said Craig McMorris, professional snowboarder and the draft broadcast host. “It was extraordinary to watch the camaraderie on display all season long in the summer, and I can’t wait to see it here in the winter.”

Chinese-American freeskier Eileen Gu was the first athlete taken off the board of over 200 competitors, drafted to XC San Francisco, where she’s from. Gu was followed off the board by Canadian snowboarder and McMorris’ brother Mark McMorris, and then XC Park City made its first pick in Chinese snowboarder Yiming Su. 

The draft lasted about two hours, with four Parkites being selected: Mac Forehand, Zoe Atkin, Alex Hall and Troy Podmilsak. These freeskiers have 23 medals, including 12 gold medals, between them. Forehand was the first Parkite drafted at pick five to XC Whistler, and Hall and Podmilsak were selected by XC Park City with the 28th and 35th picks, respectively.

“It’s honestly such an honor,” Forehand said. “I love Whistler and the area. My girlfriend lives out there, so I spent a ton of time out there. And I met Jeff Schmuck, the (general manager) of the team, when I was 13 years old. So, cool to be a part of that team, and hyped for the season.”

Not only does being drafted allow athletes like Forehand, Atkin and Hall to compete for the team championship and team prize money, but it also locks in $30,000 base salaries for multiple years, health insurance stipends and cryptocurrency-based signing bonuses. Guaranteed money and health insurance aid are extremely rare in action sports, where the athletes are often considered independent contractors. 

While Wednesday night was a joyous occasion for the drafted athletes, only 40 saw their names called. Parkites like Nick Goepper, Colby Stevenson and Marin Hamill, who have 18 X Games medals, including 11 gold medals, will have to compete as free agents this season. Free agents can compete for medals and event-specific prize money, and can be called up to fill needs if there are injuries on the teams. 

“I’ve skied really well the last few years,” Goepper said toward the end of the draft. “I’m really hopeful and confident in what I can do.”

The inaugural winter season will begin in Aspen Jan. 29-31.

The Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway has hosted several world-class events before, including the 2002 Winter Olympics’ cross country skiing, Nordic combined and biathlon competitions. 

It will again be used as a venue when the 2034 Olympics roll around. 

Wanting to increase the quality of events they host outside of ski season, Soldier Hollow is looking to host more large-scale events in addition to the Olympics. That push includes this weekend’s UCI Mountain Bike World Series stop. 

“We’ve been on a path of elevating our events out here for about five or six years,” Soldier Hollow General Manager Luke Bodensteiner said. “We have leaned into mountain biking here at Soldier Hollow as a complement to our winter season of skiing. … This World Cup is something that we’ve pursued, and I think it has helped the brand of Soldier Hollow and create awareness that we’re a really great place for a mountain bike competition.”

The Mountain Bike World Series is considered by many to be the pinnacle of endurance mountain biking. It features athletes from all around the world, including Parkite and 2024 Summer Olympics silver medalist Haley Batten. Bodensteiner said Soldier Hollow has been working to develop the World Cup course over the last few years. 

He said the crew started with the UCI course which is used for Solider Hollow’s Bike Festival, held annually in June. Last fall, they began making building up additional features to make that course more technical.

“We found some adjustments to the existing route and we tested those out at our bike fest in June, and that gave us some really good feedback on the track,” Bodensteiner said. “While bike fest isn’t World Cup level, the riders are pretty darn close to World Cup level, and so we could see how the new new features in the course rode based on that feedback, and also really based on the feedback from Haley Batten, who would come and ride the course when she was coming through town between World Cup races.”

Bodensteiner said course builders Derek and Bryce spent the last six weeks putting the final touches on the course.

Ranked 16th in the world cross country standings, Batten will be racing in the short track and cross country World Cup races from 1 to 1:25 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, respectively. Including Batten’s races, there will be eight races over the weekend featuring men’s and women’s U23 and older bikers. 

The athletes began training on the Soldier Hollow course on Thursday afternoon and will do the same again on Friday. 

There will be a fan zone featuring organizations such as the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, the Wasatch Trails Foundation and Woodward Park City, open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. all weekend for fans, in addition to food and beverage vendors. 

“A lot of those are really meant to engage and entertain the fans,” Bodensteiner said. “We are anticipating a big crowd, probably approaching 6,000 spectators per day, and we want to make this into a festival atmosphere for the fans. … They’re going to be racing throughout the day, and in between races, we want people to have fun out here and know it’s going to be a lively atmosphere with lots of music. We have three DJs on site on different parts of the course.”

There will also be activations like the SCOTT Test Track, where fans can try out new bikes, the Woodward Jump Jam, where there will be freestyle and big air biking, and a high school biking short track exhibition on Saturday afternoon.

“They’re holding this short course exhibition to give them exposure,” said Park City Schools Mountain Bike Team Head Coach Pete Stoughton. “We have a cohort of freshmen who are really, really good, and a lot of those freshmen are going out there to race, and they are going to be showcasing their talents. … The ones that I’ve talked to I know are excited to be on a UCI and a World Cup course.”

Stoughton believes program alumna Batten and the other professional bikers can serve as good inspiration to his bikers who attend the event. 

“We’ve got some girls in our community who possibly could get there,” Stoughton said. “It would be really cool that part of their transformative memory is getting to meet Haley and seeing how humble, hardworking and determined Haley has been.”

Bodensteiner said he encourages fans this weekend to purchase parking tickets, which he said are selling quickly but still available, carpool or ride their bikes to Soldier Hollow. The venue will have a place for fans to drop off their bikes while watching the races. 

After Soldier Hollow, there’s only one short track and cross country stop left in the series on Oct. 4-6 in Lake Placid, New York.

Last weekend marked Deer Valley Resort’s return to elite downhill racing after its essential role in competitive mountain biking throughout the ’90s and early 2000s.

The Fox US Open of Mountain Biking brought hundreds of racers and countless spectators from across the world to Park City. The crowds were loud, racers were fast and the track was widely celebrated. 

On Friday, racers participated in practice rounds and the first group of qualifying runs. Both professional and amateur athletes competed. Groups were divided by age and skill.

Evan Lee and Ethan Ortega traveled from California to experience the US Open. Lee and Ortega have both raced at US Open and national competitions in the past, and Lee raced at Deer Valley this weekend. 

“There’s lots of stoke and lots of skill levels,” Ortega said. “That’s what makes (Deer Valley) special.”

Both Lee and Ortega said the track was better than others they’d raced at past national and US Open competitions.

“It’s steeper and more challenging,” Lee said. 

Ortega said he liked the dry gravel of the track at Deer Valley more than the track at the previous host location in Vermont, saying it has a specific “West Coast” appeal.

“(They) nailed it audience wise. Park City is an action sports city. There are more people who already want to come here. This is just another reason,” Ortega said. 

After the qualifying rounds determined who would race Saturday, fans and racers migrated up the mountain to the Silver Lake Lodge to watch the best whip competition. 

“Let’s get loud, Deer Valley!” shouted the commentator. 

Spectators crowded the landing zone and the front of Silver Lake Lodge and sat alongside the trails to catch the best view. In whip contests, athletes jump off large ramps and kick the back wheel of their bike to the side, soaring perpendicular to their jump trajectory before straightening out to land.

“The vibes are high,” said DC and Liz Wright, Park City locals and Deer Valley mountain bike team coaches.

The Wrights have been fans of downhill mountain bike racing and were excited to see the return of pro races to Deer Valley after nearly two decades since hosting its last elite downhill race.

“To have the community all out here together is great,” DC said. 

Liz coaches the women’s team at Deer Valley, and both she and DC said they were stoked to see more women in the practice sessions this year. Gender inclusion is becoming more common in extreme sports like downhill mountain biking, but the category is still heavily male dominated, reflected in the participation numbers at the US Open: Out of the 320 racers, 53 were women. 

The winding, fast-paced action continued at Deer Valley on Saturday, when the men’s and women’s professional and U18 youth categories raced in the premier events of the week. Bikers and fans flooded the resort once more, many even hiking from Deer Valley’s Snow Park base up Bald Eagle Mountain to secure their view of their favorite section of the course. Some fans brought sawless chainsaws, which echoed across the resort. 

Logan Drake made the hour-plus trek down from Ogden for Saturday’s professional and U18 races. He’s a huge mountain biking fan who had a mountain biking season pass at Deer Valley this summer and will return to the Wasatch Back this week for the UCI World Cup at Soldier Hollow. Drake parked himself next to the finish line Saturday, fancying it one of, if not the, best spots to catch the action. 

“The biggest difference (between amateur and professional riders) is the pace that these guys carry down the track,” Drake said. “They go super fast and over the gnarliest obstacles. The speed they have is insane.”

In addition to seeing the world’s best up close, Drake said he enjoyed the sense of community at the event. He felt like Deer Valley helped it feel like a casual hangout with fellow mountain bikers with vendors to supply beer and food. Drake encourages those who couldn’t make it to the US Open to consider coming out to the World Cup to revel in the mountain biking atmosphere.  

Also enjoying being part of the packed crowd at Deer Valley on Saturday was John Gibbons of Issaquah, Washington. Gibbons came to town to support his son, Austin Gibbons, who finished 42nd in the men’s U18 category. Traveling the country watching Austin race and a biker himself, John believes Deer Valley is the best venue the two have been to all year. 

“The feedback from the racers is the course is fantastic,” John said. “It looks like they’re pulling off a great event, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it here again next year.”

Deer Valley said it hopes to host the US Open again and other mountain biking events if the US Open is deemed a success. 

John believes the resort and town’s expansive trail system could help draw further riders to potential future US Opens at Deer Valley, in addition to word spreading about how well run the event was. 

George Ryan, one of the professional men’s competitors, said the loose dirt and rocks, as well as how steep the course was, made for one of his favorite challenges. He has raced every US Open since the event’s inception in 2003. Ryan finished in 61st on Saturday. 

“This is one of the most fun tracks I’ve ridden in a long time,” Ryan said. “And I’ve heard the same thing from a lot of the other racers. They’re having so much fun out there. It’s not like the hardest thing ever, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s super fun, and the venue has been great.”

Ryan said he and the competitors could hear the crowd blaring megaphones and revving chainsaws as they prepared for the race, and that energy was part of what made the weekend so great. He hopes first-time fans saw just how exhilarating the sport can be. Ryan enjoyed what were sunny but not overly warm temperatures last week and spent a lot of his free time on Park City Main Street.

Nate Kitchen of the United States won the professional men’s race on Saturday, and Aletha Ostgaard, also from the United States, won the professional women’s. The United States’ Boston Bryant came out on top of the U18 men’s competition, and Ainsley Wolf from the United States won the U18 women’s.

On Friday night, the remodeled Dozier Field opened for the Miners football team’s game against Salem Hills. 

While Park City dropped that game 14-7, falling to 1-4, they were able to welcome fans to their home for the first time this season and showcase the field’s improvements. 

Dozier Field is part of an ongoing, nearly $48 million athletic facilities facelift at Park City High School, also including new baseball, softball and mixed-use fields along Kearns Boulevard. 

The Dozier Field upgrades that were completed in time for Friday’s game were a new entryway into the stadium, new bathrooms adjacent to the entry, the first level of new stands, a walkway from the entrance to the stands and a new speaker system. The school district said these improvements mark “around 80%” completion of the project, with “some degree of final detailed finishing” required.

What still awaits fans are the track, the completed walkway around the stadium, turf to sit on surrounding the sidewalks, the second level of the stands, press boxes, concession stands and locker rooms. 

The school hopes to have some of the remaining features of the new stadium completed for their next home game and homecoming on Sept. 25, when the Miners welcome Uintah. 

Despite the stadium not being fully completed, Park City High School Principal Caleb Fine and other fans were happy to be welcomed back and see what progress had been made. 

“We’re incredibly excited to be able to host a home game on Dozier,” Fine said. “This facility has been closed for a long time, and even though it’s not done, I think people get a feel for how awesome it is.”

Fine thanked the school board for their support of the upgrade project. 

The principal is excited for many exhilarating Friday night football and other games on the field yet to come. 

“It’s a beautiful facility,” Fine said. “We can’t wait to have our girls soccer senior night out here in a week and a half.”

Fine hopes the stadium can accommodate about 3,000 people when the stands and sitting turf around the walkway are complete. 

Parkites Alan and Kristina Hoeksema, who were in attendance at Friday’s game, said they are excited to watch their daughter, junior Finley Hoeksema, play lacrosse in the new stadium and on the other Kearns Boulevard fields. They also hope it can provide some stability for the school’s graduation ceremony, which was held at Deer Valley Resort this past school year. 

“It was a great facility before,” Kristina said. “We feel overly indulged and lucky that it’ll be even more beautiful.”

Kristina said she believes high school memories are often forged at every school’s football stadium. 

With Alan being a contractor, the Hoeksemas understand and aren’t disappointed in the delays to the project, which the school hoped to have ready for the Miners’ home opener on Aug. 28. Instead, the team had to play at South Summit High School.

“If you anticipate anything other than delays in construction, you’d be delusional,” Kristina said. 

Alan continued, “I’m sure the contractor is really happy about holding the event here tonight. I was thinking about all the measures they had to take to secure the area. I appreciate that from the contractor standpoint.”

The delays also didn’t surprise Parkite and Park City High School alumnus David Wintzer. He brought his friend Jackson Lyons, who was visiting from Australia, out for Lyons’ first American football game. 

“(This is Dozier Field’s) third revision since I was here,” Wintzer said. “It’s a complete trip to see it evolve. … I think it’s going to be something special.”

By the excited look in Lyons’ eyes, it was safe to say the new stadium meets the standards for an Australian’s expectations of the American high school football experience. 

“It’s like a movie for me,” Lyons said. “The cheerleaders, the band. … I’m trying to wrap my head around what’s going on. Very cool. Very cool.”

After next week’s Uintah game, the only other Park City regular season home game will be against Deer Creek on Oct. 14.

On Friday night, the Miners football team welcomed fans to the remodeled Dozier Field for the first time as they took on Salem Hills. 

Hundreds of eager fans showed up and continued flooding the stadium well into the first quarter. 

The fans watched what looked sure to be a Miners victory as the final seconds of the first-half clock were ticking away. 

Park City quarterback Josh Hofer had given the team a 7-0 lead with a late first-quarter rushing touchdown. The Miners made one final tackle in Salem Hills territory to seemingly close the half with that lead. 

All of a sudden, the ball shot out of the Salem Hills player’s hands during that tackle, winding up in the arms of Salem Hills’ Reggie Smith. Smith streaked up the sideline for the tying touchdown as the clock expired. 

“They had a fluke play,” said Park City Head Coach Dennis Cunningham. “We have got to be aware enough to make another tackle.”

The fluke play did just what Miners fans hoped it wouldn’t: shift the tides in favor of Salem Hills. 

A late third-quarter touchdown pass from Salem Hills quarterback Cash Hollingshead to Smith was enough for the visitors to secure a 14-7 victory. 

The loss dropped Park City, coming off their first win of the season, to 1-4. 

“There were plays out there for us to win the game,” Cunningham said. “We have got to catch the ball when the ball is thrown to us, stay onside and execute our assignments. … We didn’t execute, so we have just got to get better.”

In the wake off the loss, the head ball coach preached to his players that they aren’t a worse team than Salem Hills.

Cunningham also doesn’t believe the Miners are worse than defending 4A Region 8 champion Provo, who Park City faces at 7 p.m. this Friday on the road. Provo took down Salem Hills in overtime the week before the Miners faced them. Provo narrowly beat Park City at Dozier Field last season. 

“If we beat Provo, then being region champions is still in front of us,” Cunningham said. “All we have got to do is keep making progress. … We’ve got a young team, and we’re growing up.”

Because of his young team, Cunningham implored players to be smart and look after themselves. The Miners hit the gym and did recovery work over the weekend, returning to practice Monday. 

“Provo is a big physical team,” Cunningham said. “We have got to come prepared to play and play our best. We didn’t play our best today.”

Even in the loss, playing on the new Dozier Field meant a lot to Park City. 

“I’ve been in Dozier since it’s been metal (bleachers) when my brother was playing,” said Miners lineman Anthony Villicana. “It’s been like the best atmosphere I’ve ever been at. With the big change, it looks wild now. Every home game will look much better and better.”

Miners senior center Delkin McCloskey believes the team will pack the new field out and win their homecoming game on Sept. 25 against Uintah. 

Park City High School Principal Caleb Fine, who attended Friday’s game, is excited about the team.

“They’re fighting hard, which we’re really excited about,” Fine said.

It was a grand opening of sorts Friday night for the remodeled, yet still under construction, Dozier Field, but it wasn’t a party for the Miners football team, who fell 14-7 to Salem Hills.

Park City took an early lead on a first quarter touchdown rush from senior quarterback Josh Hofer, which it held until the final seconds of the first half, when Salem Hills took a fumble 75 yards forward to the end zone. That score put Salem Hills right back in the game, and a late third quarter lengthy touchdown pass was enough for the visitors to hold onto for the win.

“We should have won the game,” Miners Head Coach Dennis Cunningham said. “We didn’t execute. So we have just got to get better.”

Park City is 1-4 and will travel to face Provo at 7 p.m. next Friday.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens this year,” said Parkite and contractor Alan Hoeksema about the new field. “But we’ll be able to sit in nice new stands. … I’m sure the contractor is really happy about holding the event here tonight.”

World-class mountain biking has officially returned to Deer Valley Resort, with competitors having arrived for this week’s Fox US Open of Mountain Biking. 

The bikers have been arriving sporadically starting Wednesday, when some were allowed to inspect the NCS competition trail. Others arrived Thursday, when the first two practice sessions were held. 

There will be additional practice sessions before some qualifying and the Best Whip trick competition at 5 p.m. Friday by Deer Valley’s Silver Lake Lodge. The professional finals will start at 3 p.m. Saturday and the youth and amateur races at 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday, respectively.

Bikers are coming in from California and Colorado for the race. They’re excited and saying the practice sessions are going well so far. 

“We just got here this morning,” Aaron Vargas from Los Angeles said Thursday. “It’s super steep, it’s loose and it looks like it’ll be fun for sure.”

Vargas is in Park City for the week with a crew from Trailhead Bike Shop in Alhambra, California. He is ranked fourth in the Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series in the category just below professional. A win this weekend would help him in his quest to go pro next year. 

“I have to do well this weekend and hopefully get that podium,” Vargas said. “It would be amazing and make my whole weekend for sure.”

Vargas said the Trailhead team has been loving Park City as well thus far. 

Dianne Shannon is in from Denver supporting her son, also racing the same category as Vargas this weekend. She was enjoying the sunny, warm weather Thursday during the practice sessions. 

“He’s incredibly excited,” Shannon said of her son. “The track is pretty interesting. He likes some of the features and technical pieces.”

Shannon believes Deer Valley will “be a zoo” this weekend. 

Some teams like Salt Lake City’s RaceKraftMTB haven’t had to travel nearly as far. Team head Kris Baughman and his youth bikers are excited for what they’re considering to be a home race this week. 

“Pretty exciting,” Baughman said. “I’m an old-school dude. I helped to build the track here in like 1998 and then helped to build a number of lower mountain tracks. So it’s really cool to see a big race come back here after the big national series died down somewhere around 2009.” 

Baughman said Deer Valley’s team did a great job cutting down trees and widening the new track for this week. He’s glad they’re committed to hosting another world-class event, as they do other times of the year. 

Baughman explained that the track inspections can allow riders to find different lines to attack when biking, if they take the time to carefully examine. 

“It is really meaningful,” Baughman said about strong crowd support this week. “We had a big national round at Solitude in July, so we got to experience a really big crowd. … So we have some experience with that, but this is another level of excitement and hype.”

As has become usual this season, the Miners girls soccer team easily dispatched another opponent in Juan Diego Catholic Thursday, winning 6-0. 

A 2-0 lead taken into halftime by Park City allowed the team to play 22 of its players in the win. The Miners saw all six of their goals scored by six different players. Goalscorer Elsa Dellenbach led the team with two assists. 

The win was Park City’s eighth-straight. In this winning streak, the Miners have outscored opponents 49-1. 

Ranked third in 4A, Park City is working to perfect their craft ahead of October’s playoffs. They have seven regular season games left, including Sept. 24 senior night against Murray. They plan to host the game at the remodeled Dozier Field, which is opening during later construction stages for Friday night’s Miners football game. 

“Last night was a good representation of what we’re capable of,” Miners Head Coach Anthony DiCicco said. “Our depth is certainly a strength of ours. … We have so many players who are a threat on any given day.”

DiCicco said his team has been playing so well rounded he couldn’t come up with an immediate answer when recently asked by a ref who their leading scorer is. That player is junior Ashtyn Holder with nine goals, though Holder is one of five Park City players with five or more goals this season. 

DiCicco said Holder was one of a few junior varsity players last season who got playing time on varsity. He likes to offer such opportunities so these players are ready to step up if needed in the playoffs.

The Miners will have a perfect opportunity to spread the ball around again at 3:30 p.m. Monday when they travel to face Cottonwood. They will face a combination junior varsity and varsity team against Cottonwood, who doesn’t have a junior varsity team this season. Park City defeated Cottonwood 9-0 doing the same thing Aug. 27. 

“It will actually be an entirely different squad than saw them the first time,” DiCicco said. “And so that comes with its own unique challenges: a group that hasn’t together quite as much has to come together on the fly and problem solve, and Cottonwood is not the easiest place to go play. We know we’ll be the better team, we just have to go execute.”

Aside from working in those younger players, DiCicco believes his team can continue to work on breaking other team’s rhythms and finishing in front of the opposing nets down the final stretch of the season. He said they constantly work on these things in practice and in games. DiCicco believes the Miners’ strongest opponent and best challenge can often be themselves in practice. 

With the playoffs having been paired down from 24 to 16 teams this season, there will be less margin for error for Park City. They will need to hit the ground running against what could be more battled tested teams from other parts of Utah. 

“The St. George, Provo and Northern regions are regions where you get teams that maybe don’t have records that are as good as ours but are very much battle tested because of the quality of some of the opposition that they’re seeing throughout the regular season,” DiCicco said. “One thing about this group that’s been true over these last several years is that they are up for it. They don’t take teams lightly, and their focus is on themselves and being the best version of ourselves that we can be.”

DiCicco said crowd support has been strong thus far at their home games in Quinn’s Junction. They’d certainly appreciate further support as they work toward playoffs.

Miners

The Miners girls volleyball team took down East on Thursday by three sets to none. Park City dominated sets one and two, winning them 25-9 and 25-10, respectively, and squeaked out set three 25-23. The Miners are 6-4 and will next face Highland at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

The Miners girls tennis team defeated Jordan Thursday by five matches to none. Park City scored wins at three singles and two doubles spots. The Miners are 3-3 and will next take on Judge Memorial Catholic at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road. 

Wasatch High School

The Wasatch girls soccer team fell to Provo 2-1 Thursday. The Wasps scored the game’s only first-half goal, then conceded two goals in the second half. Wasatch is 8-4 and will next take on Mountain View at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Wasatch girls volleyball team fell to Skyridge Thursday by three sets to none. The Wasps lost set one 25-14, set two 25-8 and set three 25-21. Wasatch is 7-5 and will next face Summit Academy at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Wasatch girls tennis team fell to Timpanogos Wednesday by seven matches to none. The Wasps lost four singles and three doubles matches. Wasatch is 7-7 in dual matches and will face Uintah at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. 

Deer Creek High School

The Deer Creek girls soccer team fell to Mountain View 6-2 Thursday. The Riverhawks scored both of their two goals in the second half of the loss. Deer Creek is 2-9 and will  next face Timpanogos at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Deer Creek girls volleyball team fell Thursday to Maple Mountain by three sets to none. The Riverahawks lost the first set 25-16, the second 25-10 and the third 25-21. Deer Creek is 1-12 and will take on Orem at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. 

South Summit High School

The South Summit football team defeated South Sevier last Friday 43-7. Quarterback Ian Mair led the Wildcats with three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) in the win. South Summit is 3-1 heading into the San Juan game at 7 p.m. this Friday. The Wildcats fell to San Juan in last season’s state title game. 

The South Summit girls soccer team took down rival North Summit 5-1 Thursday. The Wildcats scored three goals in the first half and two in the second half of the win. South Summit is 4-5 and will next take on American Leadership Academy at 4 p.m. Monday at home.

The South Summit girls volleyball team fell to Union Thursday by three sets to none. The Wildcats dropped the first set 25-12, the second 25-14 and the third 25-11. South Summit is 4-8 and will next face Millard at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

North Summit High School

The North Summit football team dominated Parowan last Friday 45-0. Quarterback Cru Richins led the Braves with three touchdowns (two passing and one receiving) in the win. North Summit is 3-1 and will take on Kanab at 7 p.m. this Friday on the road. 

The North Summit girls soccer team fell to rival South Summit 5-1 Thursday. The Braves are 1-6 and will next face St. Joseph at 4 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The North Summit girls volleyball team fell to North Sanpete Thursday by three sets to two. The Braves won the second and fourth sets in the loss. North Summit is 10-2 and will face Gunnison Valley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
