The Young Artists' Academy (YAA) is a free program and organization offered by the Kimball Art Center for students dedicated to the study and practice of the visual arts.

The program runs for the course of an entire year, beginning and ending each May.

This program is open to all Summit and Wasatch County students between the ages of 13 and 18. Applications must be submitted by email (yaa@kimballartcenter.org ) or in person by Sunday, April 27.

Once selected, the group of artists will develop their ideas and philosophies of the visual arts through a variety of creative projects and community events.

Students in this program enrich their portfolios and resumes, meet local artists, explore careers in the visual arts and learn responsibility and reliability.

They also participate in critiques that encourage them to learn about the many different viewpoints in art.

The artists also get the opportunity to show their works in the Kimball Art Center's annual Wasatch Back Student Art Show in the spring. The current exhibit is on display in all three galleries and will run through Sunday, May 25.

The YAA is just one of many education programs provided for free to the community by the Kimball Art Center.

Why did you want to be involved in the Winter Art Salon?

To support the fantastic work and community service of the Kimball Art Center! I taught high school art for a number of years and I experienced the benefits that visual arts exposure brings to educating and developing a whole person. With their diverse exhibits and classes, the Kimball has been an integral part of the BEST of Park City for over 35 years. Our community needs for the Kimball to continue to thrive and grow with us.

What do you think is unique about this event?

The artists! Imagine the jewelry of two world class jewelers, the sculpture of the world's premiere glass artist, the lithographs of a talented prince, and the artistic legacy of one of the world's greatest leaders brought together for a few days on top of our local mountain. I am thrilled to be in their company!

Describe the work you will have as part of the event.

I am showing a mixture of recent and older work. As a landscape artist, I am always seeing new ways to represent light, color, heat, form, patterns. My lifetime of work has been a progressive commentary on the natural world—hoping to inspire people to experience its wonder and to share in our collective responsibility of intelligent stewardship. While my recent work is completely abstract, it is still grounded in nature. Over the past two years I have been working on several series: "Landscape of Resonances," "Creation" and "Nature's Mirage." Paintings from each series will be in The Winter Art Salon.

Geeta V. Patel is a former Sundance Institute Directing Fellow and Tribeca TAA Fellow, who also directed the award-winning Sundance/ITVS documentary "Project Kashmir," and is currently the writer/director of a narrative trilogy "Mouse," produced by Grant Hill ("Tree of Life").

Patel's brother Ravi is most recognized for his work on "Scrubs," "Transformers," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and on NBC's "The New Normal."

He is the co-founder of the granola-based snack, This Bar Saves Lives, whose parent organization gives a meal to a starving child in Africa for every bar they sold.

Applications are being accepted for the Kimball Art Center's fourth annual Members' Pin Up Show, a non-juried exhibition and sale open to KAC members.

Members can display pieces of their work in the Badami Gallery from Friday, Sept. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 11.

On Friday, Sept. 28, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. participating artists and KAC members are invited to enjoy the show and Gallery Stroll.

Submission guidelines are as follows:

Encaustic painting, from the Greek word "encaustikos," means "to burn in," and it is an ancient process used during the third century B.C. by the Fayum Greeks near Cairo, who used it as a means of patching boats and making wax portraits on sarcophagi before discovering its beauty as an art form.

Encaustic painting is one of the most stable mediums. "It's a very spontaneous and loose process," Juhlin says. Beeswax is heated to about 200 degrees and infused with pigment and Damar Resin (sap from an Oriental tree). The pigmented wax is then applied with a brush or palette knife to an absorbent, rigid panel like birch plywood, Plexiglas or even wooden doors. A blow-torch or heat gun, or in Juhlin's case, a crème brulee torch, is then used to re-heat the surface to manipulate it and fuse it to the base and each succeeding layer.

Artists can add gold leaf, photographs, paper, oils or other objects into the warm wax. "You can always rework it -- carve it, scrape it or add to it -- by re-heating it. There is a luminescent quality and depth of surface to encaustic painting that you don't get with other processes," says Juhlin, "and because I am a sculptor, I like the physicality of it. I love to get my hands on it all day!"

Juhlin has taught encaustic workshops in Maui, Hawaii, at Sweetbriar College and at the Virginia Center for the Arts in Roanoke, Va. He also teaches workshops at his warehouse in Salt Lake City and he is one of the artists that will be featured in a collective encaustic show at the Kimball Art Center next year.

Try your hand at this fascinating art form by taking Juhlin's one-day encaustic painting workshop on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch break) at the Kimball Art Center.
